Identification

My identity is something I have always struggle with, and yet, it is the strongest influence in my work.  To explain, I am a black woman who hasn't been part of the black community in a real, authentic way, at any point in my life. This wasn't by choice, but was a life handed to me by my adoptive parents. I was conditioned to play the role of a white child, while being a black one.

I'm in my fifties now and have done a lot of healing. There were many times I suffered from depression. My own thought life was the very noose around my neck, preventing me to just simply be who I was. An artist, a mother, an advocate to name just a few. Settling in my womanhood, as just only a fraction of what makes me a whole human being. It is much more comfortable for me now.

A women who is part of two cultures. There are two women I follow on Youtube, it's Womansphere and Shallon Lester. One is black and the other is white: and to describe both of these women, is to use the word, sovereign, spoken, by Womanshere herself, all the time. And that word sovereign, that really impacted my spirit in the beautiful way.

Here is what I take from their message. It's to question what we believe about ourselves as women, and where it comes from. I care a great deal, about other women, my heart as always been an admirer of all types of women ever since I was a child. Seeing other women thrive, inspires me to learn what type of mindset for success and apply it to my work. And I have learned a great deal about putting myself first, creating my own identity from within. My likes, my dislikes. My strengths and weaknesses, and having the ability to completely edify, myself. My story is my own, and I can't twist myself into a pretzel to fit a cultural narrative place upon me without my consent.
